one song a day: song four | song that makes you sad

I love musicals. It's one of those weird things that sometimes people don't expect me to like. But I admit, I'm a musical snob. I'd never set foot in a theatre for something like "Legally Blonde: The Musical". And with so much garbage on Broadway because people won't take chances and just spend money on things they are familiar with as movies... shows like where my song today comes from, get overlooked by the masses. Which is a shame.

I was incredibly fortunate to see it twice; once on Broadway the weekend Matt and I got engaged. That was with the original Broadway cast, including Lea Michelle (now on Glee) and Johnathan Groff (who guest starred on Glee this past season). The second time I saw it, it was the travelling show and we got stage seating, which was one of the most amazing experiences in my life (again, total musical nerd). When you sit on stage, they give you a little rundown before the show starts of what you can and cannot do ( so you don't bother the actors or spoil the show in any way). One of the things is that you can't sing along because the microphones will pick it up. That wasn't a problem, I can control that. But when it gets to this part of the show, where today's song comes from, I was struggling not to audibly cry. Nobody needed that going across the sound system.

(SPRING AWAKENING SPOILERS AHEAD)

But this song makes me so incredibly sad because it's sung by the lead, Melchior, at the funeral for his best friend, the tortured character of Moritz—to the parents who had treated the delicate Moritz so coldly. Groff's voice is hauntingly beautiful and cuts me to the core.

And all of the crying you wouldn't understand. You just let him cry, 'make a man out of him.'
